On October 22, 2016 Pope Francis has released an official guideline on how we care for the ashes of the deceased. The Vatican document says: “The ashes of the deceased must be laid to rest in a sacred place, such as in a cemetery or Columbarium”. It goes on to state that “it is not permitted to keep the ashes in a home or to scatter them in the air, on land, at sea, or in some other way. Nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry, or other objects.” In short, the Vatican says YES to cremation but NO to scattering of ashes anywhere.
The release of the above Vatican Guideline we at St. Edward’s Parish have undertaken to establish a Columbarium. It is not made of bricks but granite. The location of where the Columbarium will stand is very important to us because it faces the Altar and this will remind the priest who celebrates the Mass, to pray for the souls named on the Columbarium; and the congregation, too, will be reminded to pray for the deceased members of their families, relatives and friends.
This Columbarium is divided into two parts: the 140 niches or holes where we place the ashes of the deceased; and the memorial wall (yellow part) which is composed of small plaques, around 150 plaques, where we put the names of our departed. This project was completed before Christmas 2016.
In 2021 a second wall was installed. This wall consists of 96 niches.
